a day in the life

so the first half of this post will be "a day in the life of Krista" just because today was so awesome and I would love to get to share it with you all so you can experience it too.

so being the AUX is awesome. the aux shift is the "extra" in case someone gets sick, or wants o leave early, or someone calls in, etc. which means you get to staff some of our extra exhibits for a few hours while they decide what to do with you. which means you get to see new things, get asked new questions, and generally have a new day. so here is my today. it's not my normal everyday, but all of this was my AUX day.

8:45am. arrive at SW. enjoy a cart ride to the office instead of walking the 3/4 mile walk.
8:55am be informed that the new pilot whale who arrived last week has been moved to a facility accessible and open to the education staff to get to see.
9:03am go see freaking adorable pilot whale and ooh and ahh at her for 4 minutes.
9:07am arrive at dolphin underwater viewing. enjoy the air conditioning for the hour that you have it. talk to kids all about the cool things dolphins do.
9:24am flamingo parade arrives in dolphin underwater viewing. WHAT?! there are flamingos in here? apparently when the heat index is high, they parade into the air conditioning (smart birds) instead of continuing their park parade. enjoy being 4" from a flamingo. tell the guests to be sure and see the new flamingo chick (ADORABLE). it is, after all, baby season at SW.
9:37am enjoy watching a little boy have giggle fits every time a dolphin swims by him.
10:28am enjoy watching a guest who brought a slinky, and watching the dolphins watch it.
11:00am get new assignment: go to arctic for 7 minutes to relieve someone who has a meeting. arrive to find out that the brother/sister polar bear pair are in the exhibit together today, are awake, and are SWIMMING AND PLAYING in the water. bask in your luckiness as you have never seen the polar bears move more than a few feet. inform all guests nearby to take full advantage of this moment.
11:42am arrive at the sealions. answer the questions "is it dead?" about 8 times. "yes, we have dead ones in here for you to look at." just kidding. the answer is "no he is just napping. he can crawl back over the rocks. I promise he didn't fall and get stuck." point out the sea lion pups for this season.
11:56am arrive at dolphin nursery. enjoy announcing and pointing out the 4 day old baby dolphin.
3:36pm answer the question "is he dead?" several more times in reference to the seaturtle......."nope." answer the question "are turtle shells bulletproof?" with your eyes. oops I'm not supposed to flinch. but why would you ask that? answer the question "what happened to the turtle?" in reference to the seaturtle shell you currently have in your hands. "ummm he died." why do we hold that silly thing? everyone is more concerned about the has-been turtle than touching his shell. I promise we saved 523 other ones last year! we really tried!
4:06pm don't collapse under the pressure of a school group with worksheets about seaturtles. you can answer high school questions about seaturtles. I hope.
5:14pm clock out. what a day!
7:01pm arrive at the dogpark with your doggy who had such a long day at home by himself! meet lila, may and bug, and enjoy an hour and a half with your nonhuman bestfriend. remember the time that rhett came home and said "so that's how you're supposed to use those doggy baggies" and remember wondering "well what were you doing before?"

I hope you all had fun with me today!

Rhett has been at his summer offsite since thursday afternoon (I miss him oh so much) and he gets back tomorrow evening (before I do!). can't wait for our now-postponed-to-wednesday date at aquatica? it was going to be monday evening but I was able to switch my schedule around so that we could make it to....drumroll please.... Texas A&M vs. UCF women's soccer game! WHOOP! the aggies storm orlando!! we are so excited. thank you central florida texas a&m club for paying attention and letting us know they are coming!

tomorrow before work my daddy's cousins are coming up from west palm beach to visit SW, and I am excited to get to see them and spend a little bit of time with them before I have to clock in. can't wait to meet their kiddos!

I also put in job apps for a few more places. I will know by Thursday the SW situation. : )
more soon!

this just in....

that's right. this will be the headline special...where each piece of news is shocking and/or dumb enough to receive a worthy front page story with awesome headline. there were too many prospective titles to only choose one for this blog post. and most of these are from work. I'll just tack on our other news at the end.

circle circle, dot dot, now you need a rabies shot. no, the squirrels do not belong to us. and if you feed them, they might just bite you. duh.

crazy hair.
3 year old girl asks 2 year old girl a question. 2 year old turns to 3 year old and says "you have crazy hair."

sir, are you alright?
man falls asleep while waiting for children to look at all the animals in the manta aquarium. being the dad on a vacation is definitely the hardest job.

why is squidward a squid and not an octopus?
just in case you were ever curious, it's because the illustrator thought that 8 legs was too many, and made him look like he had poopy pants.

you baptized your child where?
what do you do when a dad dunks his infant into the dolphin pool and then walks away with her half dripping wet? your guess is as good as mine.

give me some of that misty goodness.
in the florida heat there is no excuse not to have your child fan and mist you.

you want to be what when you grow up?
you still have a lot of years of school left if you appear to be in high school, tell me that an octopus is a squid and a starfish is an octopus and then tell me you want to be a marine biologist.

yes, lettuce is high in fiber.
manatees eat lots of salad. lots of salad means lots of fiber. lots of fiber means lots of gas. lots of gas means lots of questionable bubbles arising from the manatee.

wazzup wood stork.
this number is pretty funny. wood storks when basking appear to be picking a fight. whats up.

I'm sorry you grilled your pet turtle.
"I used to have a turtle, not a sea turtle but a box turtle. then my dad put it outside so it could warm up. then we forgot. then we had hamburgers for dinner and the turtle was too close to the grill and it got too hot and it died." yikes.

howling at the moon....or clawing at the water.
both look crazy. pulling the water closer to you does not actually bring the dolphins with it.

goodbye guinea pig, hello sea lion.
"can I buy one? I'll take really good care of it...I'll build it a really big pool!" me: "do you hear that dad? you're building a pool!" dad: "well we'd have to get rid of the guinea pig that has been in our family for 7 years." girl: "ok!"

it's not smart to put your children where you can't reach them.
if you have 4 children and 2 hands, you probably shouldn't lift them up all onto rocks that are above your head.

and when that picture reappears on their wedding day, they will hate you.
in 10 years when you look at the picture of your kids in front of the frisky dolphins, you will laugh. until then, those around you will laugh at you for not noticing.

the soak zone really does soak you.
duh. I guess we didn't really believe it.

if you have vertically challenged bosoms, please don't wear a strapless swimsuit.
please.

no they are not robots.
you wouldn't believe how many times the question "are they real?" is asked in reference to our animals.

no, it is just an empty pool.
you also wouldn't believe how often "is there anything in there?" is asked.

thong bikinis. enough said.

wait we have one of those? ok so this was me. until about 2 days ago I didn't know our sink had a sprayer. did I just never look for one? did I get spoiled on our apartment sink that was a sprayer/faucet in one and just forgot they weren't attached? I must have cleaned around it 30 times.

in other news: rhett starts training his new employees today! I plan on going to enjoy lunch with him so I can meet the groups on either side of lunch. also, he leaves on thursday to head to texas for the summer offsite with his company. I will miss him mucho. but he is super excited to see everyone. we have also been busy pouring into all the church ministries. we are now officially a part of the nursery, youth, college, and small group ministries. we love our church home, and all of the friends it has brought us. I find out in just a week and a half if I will be kept on at work. I don't know what to expect. each day I get a different vibe, and I would rather just know one way or the other than wait it out any longer. I applied to a doggy daycare right near our house, and have been putting feelers out just in case I need to start job hunting. I have also found another great place to volunteer in the meantime, and will probably apply there in the next few weeks (the other place had too much training to be able to work it out this time around). we are tweaking our vacation plans for october, but not by much. love you all!
